Costa Rican Cheap Vacations

Costa Rican Cheap Vacations

While tourist traps in Costa Rica can take advantage of some travelers' deep pockets, a majority of visitors to this country are looking to struggle free from these traps in search of Costa Rican cheap vacations. There are many ways in which tourists can save in Costa Rica without sparing good experiences by knowing where to stay, eat, and play.

One of the best ways to save money on Costa Rican holidays is to make friends with the locals. Native Costa Ricans, or Ticos, are a better resource than any guidebook. Locals will know the cheapest and best places to stay and eat, and they will know from experience. It is a good idea to befriend hotel staff, most of which will gladly point tourists in the right direction.

To get the cheapest hotel rates in Costa Rica, try visiting during the off season. This is the time during Costa Rica's rainy season which is May through November. Booking ahead can also lock in cheaper rates, as well as asking for group rates when traveling in large groups. Searching for hotels that offer cheap Costa Rica vacation packages is another great way to save. Many Costa Rica hotels include meals and area activities with the room rates. These cheap Costa Rica vacation packages can save tourists a bundle.

Hostels are becoming a popular alternative to hotels in Costa Rica. They offer beds at extremely cheap rates, though privacy and space are given up for the low cost. To many, this is not a problem and is a better alternative to pricey hotels.

To get good food at a good price, try visiting a soda, which is the Costa Rican version of mom-and-pop shops. These offer cheap, authentic Costa Rican food and are found throughout the country. Another way to save money is to pick up meals at the markets. It is fresh local food and very inexpensive. It is a great alternative to the American fast food chains that are located in every major Costa Rican city and a lot cheaper too. However, as with street food in any country, be sure to take caution when choosing food; make sure it looks fresh and clean all fruits and vegetables before eating them.

Another great way to experience cheap Costa Rican holidays is to walk or use public transportation. Not only can this save money, but can also be safer. Many of Costa Rica's roads are not paved and are very dangerous. Locals who know the roadways can navigate a lot more safely than an unexperienced tourist reading a map. When flagging down a taxi, make sure to only board a government certified taxi. As opposed to the unofficial taxis, the official taxis have fares set by the government to ensure cheap transportation. Unofficial taxis can charge whatever they like. These two types of taxis will be distinguished by their red color, and they have their car number in a yellow triangle on the side of the taxi, as well as on the light on top of the car.

There are several ways in which to experience Costa Rican cheap vacations. First, befriend the Ticos. They can be the most important resource to ensure cheap Costa Rican holidays. Second, book hotels early or try a hostel. Also, try cheap Costa Rica vacation packages through the hotel or hostel. Third, eat smart. Stay away from American chains. Finally, use public transportation. These steps will not only ensure Costa Rican cheap vacations, but a deeper cultural experience.
