Nicaragua Events

No matter what time of year you take a vacation in Nicaragua, you'll probably encounter some great Nicaragua festivals to enjoy. Nicaraguan culture is steeped in history and religious tradition. Throughout Nicaragua, and especially in the cities of Leon and Managua, Nicaraguan holidays offer a perfect opportunity to enjoy a parade, learn more about the history of Nicaragua, and dance the night away.

A Nicaragua event called Toro Guaco takes place in virtually every town in Nicaragua in dedication to the town's designated patron saint. The Toro Guaco is no ordinary celebration. Visiting these Nicaragua events will transport you to the 1500s, as Nicaraguans engage in mock battles and imitate characters from Spanish folklore. Some of the largest Toro Guaco celebrations in the country take place in Managua in early August, in honor of the patron Saint of Managua, Santiago. This Nicaragua attraction draws people together for loud dancing, fireworks, a colorful parade, and an official tradition that involves carrying a statue of Santiago to a shrine.  The Nicaraguan people are known for their warmth and hospitality, so feel free to partake in the festivities and ask questions. You'll learn more about Nicaraguan holidays and culture by doing so.

It doesn't have to be one of the official Nicaragua events for Nicaragua festivals to take place. Head over to Masaya, or the "city of the flowers," on Thursdays for the biggest arts-and-crafts market in the entire country, as well as a weekly folk-dancing celebration. The people of Masaya produce all kinds of interesting wooden crafts, soap, and interesting hammocks, so be sure to go browse the wares for some souvenirs. Nicaraguans like to celebrate the holidays of Nicaragua by eating tasty homeade delicacies and drinking wine and rum. You can have a taste of Nicaragua cuisine at a very inexpensive price at the Toro Guaco and the Masaya Market. Try some fried plantains or desserts made with cream and fresh papaya. The Nicaragua festivals at the Masaya Market are also a perfect stopping point after a hike up the Masaya volcano.

Fiesta Day, celebrated on August 1, is one of the most famous of all Nicaraguan holidays and is celebrated all over the country with fireworks and parades. You should also consider heading out to the beaches in Nicaragua for some great nightlife and other Nicaragua events on June 22 for a beachside fiesta in celebration of Saint San Juan. The sun-drenched beaches offer the perfect setting to play games, eat sweets, and celebrate in a uniquely Nicaraguan way.

December 7 is the day of La Gritera is also a religious celebration of epic proportions. You'll see people crying out in religious worship and exploding fireworks in communities across the country. If you're visiting Nicaragua during holy week, which starts in early April, you'll have a chance to experience all kinds of great festivities. In the city of Nandaime, ox-pulled carts travel for four days in order to reach the Popoyupa Sanctuary in Rivas to show thankfulness to life’s miracles.

If you're planning on visiting any of the coastal towns during Holy Week or any of the other Nicaraguan Holidays, be aware that hotel rooms fill up quickly and the beaches can be quite crowded. It's best to plan your Nicaragua vacation far in advance for the best availability. Nicaragua is a country full of religious and cultural traditions. Be sure to research the events taking place in Nicaragua during the time of your vacation to experience the country's rich traditions.
