Connecticut Skiing

Connecticut skiing is a popular pastime for families who visit Connecticut during the winter months. Whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway or an entire week of skiing, Connecticut ski resorts offer something for everyone. While Connecticut ski resorts are not large compared to others in the western United States, the family friendly atmosphere and the charm of Connecticut ski resorts keeps families coming back year after year. There are many Connecticut skiing options to choose from, ranging from smaller ski areas in the Greenwich and Norwich area to larger ski resorts in more rural areas.

Ski season generally starts later at Connecticut ski resorts than in the northern New England states, but most of the Connecticut ski resorts are equipped with snowmakers that will make up for lighter snowfall. Along with skiing, many resorts offer fun activities that the entire family will enjoy. The Connecticut ski area is an easy drive from New York City as well as Massachusetts and Rhode Island and makes for a relaxing weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of busy metropolitan areas.

When choosing a Connecticut ski area to spend your next vacation, families should consider many factors such as whether or not the ski area offers lessons, the difficulty of the skiing, and the overall atmosphere of the resort. Connecticut skiing is known for the more mild skiing conditions, but more experienced skiers will also have plenty of black diamond runs to choose from. Hiking and snowshoeing are also popular activities at many of the Connecticut ski resorts. Some of the larger ski areas offer hiking clubs and activities that allow visitors to explore the beautiful scenery. If you don’t own your own skis, you can rent your equipment at any ski resort or at one of the many Connecticut ski shops.

Mohawk Mountain Ski Resort is Connecticut’s largest ski resort and is known as the best in what Connecticut skiing has to offer. The resort is located in the beautiful town of Cornwall, which is located on the east bank of the Housatonic River. With 24 trails, Mohawk Mountain is Connecticut's largest Ski Resort. The Connecticut ski area features six chair lifts and designated trails for cross-country skiing. While many ski resorts close in the late afternoon, Mohawk Mountain keeps many of its runs open for people who enjoy night skiing. The resort is also popular with snowboarders because of the various terrain parks. Visitors to the Connecticut ski town of Mohawk should also make sure to visit the Mohawk State Forest.

There are many charming bed and breakfasts that will compliment any Connecticut skiing vacation. Many of these bed and breakfasts offer package deals to skiers and their families, especially later in the season when the rate of tourism in the area starts to decline. Visitors to the Hartford area should consider visiting Mount Southington. Besides skiing, visitors of this small Connecticut ski area can experience free-style terrain parks and hone their snowboarding skills on the tabletops, spines, and rails designed especially for snowboarders and free-style skiers.
