Ohio Fishing

Ohio fishing offers some of the best fishing to be had with a diverse range in the area. Small-mouth Bass, Walleye, Crappie, Panfish and Stripers are all plentiful while trout is harder to find. Reservoirs, large lakes, streams and ponds all offer sport fishing for keen anglers.

Great Ohio fishing can be found at Buckeye Lake in the central region and provides 3,600 acres of prime fishing water and 32 miles of shoreline about 120 miles south of Cleveland and Cincinnati. Ohio fishing here can end up landing Largemouth Bass, Bluegills, Channel Catfish, Bullheads, Yellow Perch and more! Boat rental is available and there are 4 public boat launches.

Fishing Ohio creeks is popular as well.  Beaver Creek State Park sits at the base of the Appalachians near Columbus and offers great scenery while angling. Smallmouth Bass and Rock Bass are popular catches at Little Beaver Creek but there roughly 63 species of fish here. The water way is extremely clean and there is a very diverse ecosystem as well. Conneaut Creek is another popular spot for fishing Ohio creeks where Steelhead abound as well as Smallmouth Bass , Walleye, Muskie and Trout.

Steelhead enter the creek later in October through April. Look for pools, riffles and deep slots. They’re usually a mile or two upstream from their last known location the following day so check reports often. Fishing Ohio creeks can be challenging but offers great locations away from crowds found at some lakes. Be patient and talk to other anglers in the area and you just might catch the fish of a lifetime!

Put In Bay on Lake Erie is a favorite Ohio ice fishing haunt for Walleye. Most active in the few hours before dusk and dawn, anglers like to get out early and fish all day. Hut rentals are convenient and easy and offer a propane stove to keep warm. The ice is usually frozen at 8 inches and more into the month of January and visitors can see the ice huts going up in droves and a small city of anglers seems to appear!

There are plenty of local and licensed guides located at the bay as well for those not familiar with the waters. Fishing licenses are necessary when with Ohio ice fishing as well as in any other fishing season. License can be bought at Put In Bay downtown at the Wharfside and are valid all through the year once purchased. A non-resident annual license is $24.00 and a one-day license is $7.00 but check before registering. Since Ohio has fairly warm winters Ohio ice fishing can come and go quickly so anglers make the best of it and keep up-to-date with the conditions.

Fishing Ohio at Piedmont Lake can result in some keepers. Secluded bays can be found where anglers can land Muskellunge, Bass and a variety of other fish in 2,270 acres of water. Piedmont Lake has two public boats launches and 10 horsepower limit. When fishing Ohio here facilities offer boat sales, rentals, service, a lunch counter, fuel, docking, and supplies as well as a motel for those wanting to spend more time on near the water. Ohio camping is also available with 80 sites to choose from that can accommodate up to 35 foot campers. There are also electric hookups provided.

Fishing Ohio for salmon can be really exciting. There are a variety of different Salmon to be caught while fishing Ohio including Chinook, Chum, Pink, Sockeye and Coho.  Salmon fishing in Ohio is at its best during the Salmon run which happens as early as May in the northern area to July going farther south. A Salmon run can happen as late as October. When Salmon fishing in Ohio the favorite method is fly fishing.
