Events

The state of South Carolina is known for the wide number of fun festivals and events that happen every month of the year in one part of the state or another. Not only are there craft festivals in South Carolina and blues festivals in South Carolina, but there are also some of the country's best art and culture festivals and some fun plant and garden festivals.

Spoleto Festival USA

The Spoleto Festival is one of the best known South Carolina events and is one of the most prominent art and culture festivals in the country. Musical performances, theatre, opera, dance and art gallery displays draw travelers throughout the months of May and June each year. To attend a specific show, contact each venue directly, or visit the Spoleto Festival website for a full list of shows. Spoleto is also considered to be one of the biggest blues festivals in South Carolina.

MCI Heritage

Every April on the island of Hilton Head, the PGA Tour heads to the Harbour Town Golf Links at the Sea Pines Plantation for a weekend golf tournament. For travelers taking their own Hilton Head golf vacation or for those who simply hope to see some of golf's best players, this is one of the premier South Carolina events. Tickets are hard to come by, so try early (at least a year in advance) to reserve yours.

Spring Fling

The month of May brings the Spring Fling festival to the quaint town of Spartanburg. This is a favorite among craft festivals in South Carolina and is also marked by beautiful spring flowers in full bloom through the park near the Spartanburg Community Center where the festival takes place. The festival happens the first weekend of May each year and is free to the public. Food is also available at the event.

Pontiac GMC Freedom Weekend Aloft

Also happening each year in the month of May is the Pontiac Weekend Aloft in the town of Anderson. This festival is a sort of carnival, featuring major musical entertainment, fireworks each night, hot air balloons and a host of amusement park rides. The festival happens during Memorial Day weekend each spring.

Lake Murray's July 4th Celebration

Although there are Independence Day celebrations happening all over the state in South Carolina, the capital city throws the biggest party each summer. In Columbia, visitors can watch more than 100 patriotically decorated boats bloat down the river and enjoy fireworks above during the evening. During the day, travelers will find one of the biggest craft festivals in South Carolina surrounded by boat rides down the river and games all day long for children. The festival is free to the public.

MOJA Festival

Those looking for blues festivals in South Carolina might also try the MOJA Festival, which takes place every October in the city of Charleston. The festival also celebrates African-American heritage in the city of Charleston and the surrounding area. Food, art exhibits, and historical tours are also part of this event.
