Recife is the capital of Pernambuco in Brazil and is considered a fairly major port city. Recife is the fifth largest city in Brazil but is less modern and cosmopolitan than some other major Brazilian cities. Recife Brazil's name was drawn from the Portugese word for reef.  The area was one of the first in Brazil to be settled by the Portugese in 1534. Pernambuco prospered from the sugar cane industry, which was originally introduced to the area by a man named Duarte Coehlo.  Recife Brazil had an abundance of fertile soil and an extremely suitable climate for the cultivation of cane. The indigenous people of Brazil were employed to work the land and cultivate the sugar cane in the areas fields. When that was no longer a viable solution to produce, the crop slaves from Africa were brought into the country between the 16th and 19th century to replace the unco-operative indigenous people and work the land themselves. This Brazilian state has very visible elements of black culture in food, dance and music because of the African people's influence. The combination of Indians, black slaves and Portuguese was so significant that it made Recife Brazil one of the most culturally diverse cities in the country.

During the 18th century rich farmers from the neighboring city of Olinda fought with traders from Recife Brazil   Recife's harbour allowed the center clear advantage followed by victory which was a decisive factor in Recife's growth into a large and thriving city.  In Recife Brazil history Recife Carnival is a long-standing tradition.  Music stages are spread out downtown and throughout the city and at night the streets are filled with reverberating music and colourful, alluring costumes. Recife Brazil history has seen this custom start in December and end the day before Ash Wednesday. The Recife Carnival has a famous tradition that takes place early Saturday morning. There is a party hosted downtown drawing in as many as 1.5 million outfitted celebraters to commemorate the crack of dawn.
